Article on Mastitis: Mastitis is the inflammation of the breast.It is the result of milk stasis in majority of cases , although infection may supervene .
Signs and symptoms:
One or more adjacent segments are inflammed and appear as a wedge shaped areas of redness and swelling.
There is elevations of body temperature, pulse,flue like symptoms including shivering and rigorous.
Types of Mastitis:
- Non infective Mastitis
- Infective Mastitis
Non infective Mastitis:
This condition results from milk stasis.It may occur during the early days of postnatal period as the result of of engorged breast may be due to poor feeding techniques.
Management:
Close supervision is important. Instruct mother on good feeding techniques encourage the mother to allow the baby to finish the first breast usually within 6-8 hours the stasis can be reserved.If no improvement antibiotics can be given prophylactically.
Infective Mastitis :
The main cause of superficial breast infection is damage to epithelium which allows bacteria to enter the underlying tissues.The damage is due to faulty feeding techniques.
Management:
- Improving the feeding techniques.
- Multiplication of bacteria may be enhanced by the stasis of milk.
- Antibiotics can be prescribed for the patient.
- Maintain intake output chart properly.
- Maintaining hand hygiene properly.
- Providing medication as per doctor’s advice.
- Giving proper position to the patient.
- Giving proper care to the patient.
